It is with great sadness that I announce the sudden passing of Leo Laros on January 6th due to complications arising from pneumonia. The instructors of the Cambridge Judo Club would like to extend our deepest sympathies to the Laros family. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.
There will be a memorial celebration for Leo at the Newdoundland Club on January 20th from 12-4pm. Memorial donations may be made in Leo’s name to makeawish.ca or alzheimer.ca “Drive to Live, Live to Ride” .
Although I don't think he ever practiced the sport himself, for many years Leo was a big part of our judo club and the wider judo community in Ontario. His two oldest sons Don and Sean, were very competitive growing up, competing at tournaments almost weekly. If anyone ever needed a ride to a tournament, there was always room in Leo's big green Lincoln Mercury. In fact, I remember hitching a ride to a tournament, and Donny's girlfriend at the time had just gotten her beginners driver's license and Leo let her drive on the way home... what an adventure that was!
Aside from his involvement with our club, Leo also transported the Judo Ontario mats to nearly every tournament in the province for many years. It was never a shock to see him around a tournament, even when his son's weren't competing. Throughout the years, he made many friends in the judo community.
We will always remember and miss him.
